What inspires you the most when you create? Pretty much everything! Emotions, what I’m doing and experiencing. I’d say it’s like having a constant dialogue going on in my mind, and I’m forever jotting down notes or making voice memos. I tend to like to have some lyric ideas before thinking about music, but sometimes it all comes at the same time whilst I play, and those times tend to be really special.
Who are your top 5 influences? My dad (Chris Winter) has undoubtedly been a huge influence on my writing, as has Russ Ballard who my dad spent many years co-writing with. The Beatles, Prince and Crowded House.
When are your new projects coming out? I’ve just released my debut solo album on the 25th Jan. I have already started working on the next album, maybe I’ll get that out before the end of the year too.
What helped you get into music? I grew up with music, my father always wrote songs and was published by Island when I was in my early teens. It meant that the majority of our family friends were professional musicians. I used to sit in on most of my dad’s recording sessions, and he encouraged me to learn various instruments from the age of seven onwards. By the age of fifteen I was writing songs. I was lucky, that with my family it all seemed natural.
What is one thing you would tell your fans? Thank you. We can’t make music without you.
What are your biggest goals for 2019? Promoting this album, getting it heard. Also working towards the next one which I’m already really excited about. At the moment it’s really nice thinking as an artist, it’s really liberating compared to the days when I used to write to a brief for other artists.
