Exclusive Interview

Bio: Born and raised on the Southwest-side of Chicago, Meelz (Amelia Cyze) is currently stationed in Los Angeles writing & producing her own music. Meelz was an active member at local LA open mic “Our Mic,” which closed in January 2018. She is now taking the creative growth from that community and her performances there and applying it to work on her debut EP. Her music is both raw and whimsical, and blends vibes of 80’s, funk, hip-hop, jazz & neo-soul. She won’t fit neatly in a box, but Meelz will make you feel, think, dance and hopefully, smile.

Who are your top 5 influences? Erykah Badu, Mick Jenkins, Janelle Monae, Sa-Roc, Sampa the Great.

When are your new projects coming out? I have a single coming soon which will be my first completely self-produced track- stay tuned for “Underpuppy!” I’m also currently working on my first EP.

What helped you get into music?I played a ton of music growing up- piano for 9 years, saxophone for 5 years, singing, dabbling in percussion and ukulele off and on. I went on to explore other creative realms in my later teens and young adulthood, but that musical foundation was always a part of me, and I think it played a huge role in me ultimately plunging into a career in music.

What is one thing you would tell your fans? I want to build up this bright shining force of light inside me and share it with you. I write songs and make music to express my truth so I can connect with and love on others.

What are your biggest goals for 2018?“Create, connect, and come correct!” I’m psyched about the music I’m developing for my EP and want to make it better and better. I want to connect with other artists, share spaces and vibes. I want to keep my i’s dotted and my t’s crossed, and stay centered and positive from within.
