Blake Shawn

Exclusive Interview

BIO? Blake Shawn McCowan-Martin was born in Tempe, Arizona on December 15, 1999. He is one of two kids. He started rapping when he was 9 and recorded his first song on a Flip Phone with his sister and cousin. When he was in 8th grade, his parents divorced. This was just one of the traumatic childhood events Blake experienced. A year prior to the divorce his foster sister was sent back to her biological family. Blake regarded her as his sister even though they were not blood related, and this was a big loss in his life. Blake’s family fostered over 10 kids throughout a 5 year period. As far as Blake’s education went: Blake bounced around a lot during high school, attending Corona Del Sol High School then moving to Marcos De Niza High School, then he dropped out of high school, went back to Corona Del Sol High School, only to drop out again. Blake struggled with depression throughout his early life and used music as an alternative to counseling.

Top 5 Influences? My top 5 influences are Chuck D (of public enemy), Andre 3000 (of outkast), Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, and Lil Wayne.

What got you into music? I mainly got into music after my parents divorced as a coping mechanism, and nobody really helped get into it, I was actually brutally made fun of for it at my high school (Corona Del Sol). Since then I’ve had a “Fuck everybody”, self-made mentality.

Anything to tell your fans? I would tell my fans, be yourself, it’s a phrase used way too much, I get that, but really all you need to do in life is be yourself, don’t follow others, don’t bother listening to what parasitic people have to say, and stay focused on what you love to do.

Biggest goals for 2017? My biggest goal for the rest of 2017 is start to make a name for myself nationally, I’ve started to become part of the “mainstream” in my home city of Tempe, Arizona, but I really want to start getting out there more nationally.

New Projects? Projects I have on the way, I’m working on my second mixtape, my debut album, and a collaborative mixtape with a fellow Arizona rapper. So I’m staying pretty busy to say the least.
