EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH JAY KWEV
Give us your bio
I’m just a guy who’s trying to bring the genuine vibe back to music who happens to smoke mad weed. & I always make sure I’m authentic with my shit, accompanied by a potent flow, smart metaphors &overall wavy verses.
Who are your top 5 influences?
That’s the magic question, hahaa. Shit man, I’ve been influenced by a lot of different artists over the years but if I had to narrow it down to who influenced my vision the most, I would start with the cool kids. When that Gone Fishin’ Mixtape came out, it let me knowthat when you stay true to your style instead of trying to go along with what’s popular in due time you’ll create your own wave. For my next one I’ll go with Wayne. I don’t think there is one 90’s baby that listensto rap that wasn’t fuckin wit Wayne. I think it was 2004 to about 2009 or 10 that had the biggest impacton me. This dude definitely showed me the importance of work ethic & staying relevant. Next I’ll keep it N.O & mention Spitta. I remember the first joint I heard from the OG was Jordan 3’s. Even to this day from Smokee Robinson to Canal )Street Confidential Spitta will let you know that with hard work you’ll go far. He basically wrote the handbook on being a real nigga & staying true in this game we in. Next imma say my Uncle Snoop, the west coast influenced me so much, especially as a youngin’ the whole movement from Cypress Hill to Dre to MC Eiht. The west coast vibe & style is undeniable, & they keep it extra funky & G. To Cap off this list that’s far from done I’ll have tosay Old Kanye. I don’t listen to as much Ye’ as I used to but albums like the College Dropout & Late Registration, even to 808’s & Heartbreaks yeezy found ways to transcend from just rap into real melodic songs with amazing replay value. Shoutout my niggaTravi$ Scott too. Drake of course but the list goes on I dont wanna leave nobody out, but I would be here allday.
When are your new projects coming out?
Right now I’m looking to drop my debut mixtape entitled CHRONICles of Le’ Chill on 4/20 of course. Im cooking up an untitled EP as well I would like to drop on my birthday 8/28. Plus im always dropping stuff out of the blue on my Soundcloud.
What helped you get into music?
To be honest, I’m not your average rapper, when im hearing a good verse over a sick bass line or 808 i feel that shit in my soul. I’ve always felt that even as ayouth. I just didn’t know why. The feeling was always there though & as i got older just being around certain crowds i shouldn’t have been i grew into that lifestyle your parents would have you avoid. At some point i started penning my frustrations, aspirations, all that shit, but i was thrash so i wrote a verse everyday for a whole school year. I failed all my classes that year but fuck it im lyrically inclined now because of it.
What is one thing you would tell your fans?
The one thing i would tell my fans is to always pursue what it is you’re passionate about in life. If it makes you happy go for that shit as long as you aint out here causing nobody harm. Real shit though its so many people out there that don’t wanna see you up, doing ya thing but you can’t pay none of that shit no mind. Get up, do you, work hard, cuz that shit will pay off. Even when you feel like you wasting your time stay persistent. Cuz once shit starts looking up there’s no looking back. That’s Kwev Life in a few words. Oh yea & ROLL UP!
What are your biggest goals for 2016?
Shit man i got big goals for the year. Way too many to list. I wanna have at the very least anywhere from 25hunnit to like 5K legit new fans. I want to shoot a gang of videos & do shows all up & down the eastcoast. SxSW is always on my mind. I wanna tour with a few artists, i ain’t gonna name drop doe.. If we cross paths it’s lit, if not then imma generate a crazy buzz & make them approach me you dig. Certain blogs i wanna get on. I wanna smoke a pound in like a day too. The only place to go is up man.
